Penfolds the Max Schubert Barossa Valley Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz

2015 marks the 100th anniversary of Max Schubert’s birth. There’s something more than a little nostalgic about this release, and I feel Schubert would be proud. Not just because it’s the blend he championed, or because it has such polish that defines the modern era of Penfolds, but that it harks back to the toned shape and even elegance of his era at Penfolds. It is this which makes this wine special and unique in the Penfolds line up, a fitting commemoration and worthy of Schubert’s name. It’s classic Penfolds in its deep purple hue, black fruit depth and wall of superfine tannin structure and yet there is a level of restraint here, a refreshing “space” and well-defined focus to the finish. Cabernet takes a confident lead in blackcurrant, leaf and capsicum, with the milk chocolate of Barossa shiraz and 100% new American oak bringing up the tail. Tannins are very fine, firm and polished, and the finish holds extremely long. 61% cabernet sauvignon and 39% shiraz. Less than 500 cases produced. Best price direct.
